In my previous posting, “A confusion of reviews – what’s to be done?”, I talked about recent comparisons of data modelling tools. Some of them illustrate a lack of knowledge of a competing product on the part of a reviewer. Very few reviewers will be experts in all the tools they examine, so that’s to be expected. I suggested that we need to get three experts together, one for each tool, to agree a common set of comparison criteria, and come up with a single comparison.
Shortly after I wrote that post, I was asked by Sybase to write detailed comparisons of PowerDesigner against ER/Studio and ERwin. As I’ve said before, I have past experience of one product and not the other. I enlisted the assistance of two UK-based specialist organisations: IPL have in-depth, up-to-date knowledge of ER/Studio, and Sandhill have years of experience with ERwin. With their assistance, and the assistance of Embarcadero and CA, I hope I’ve managed to avoid making inaccurate statements.
Note added January 25th, 2012
The reviews have just been published by Sybase, at http://www.sybase.com/products/white_papers, under ‘Business White Papers’. They also appear at http://www.sybase.com/products/powerdesigner – select ‘Resources’, then ‘White Papers’. Don’t look for them under ‘Competitive Information’, they’re not there!
I don’t know why, but the links on mypowerdesigner.com don’t work yet.
If you want direct access to the reviews, see:
ER/Studio – http://www.sybase.com/detail?id=1096040
ERwin – http://www.sybase.com/detail?id=1096023
The reviews are already out of date – CA have announced a new web portal for ERwin, which they’ll unveil on February 1st. That’s the way of the world 🙂
