How to add #Erwin Extended Notes to a #PowerDesigner model

Recently I was looking at the list of new features in Erwin Data Modeler 2020, and one feature caught my eye – Extended Notes.

I knew that I could add a very similar feature to any object in PowerDesigner in less than 10 minutes, with absolutely no programming.

Here’s a simple Logical Data Model – the Entity “Contact Type” has four Extended Notes (one of those has its own Extended Note)

Here’s one of those notes. The properties are all standard, except for Status , Author, and Importance, which I defined in a Model Extension.

These Extended Notes can be compared and merged using the standard PowerDesigner Merge / Compare utility, and I can include them in Reports, List Reports, and Dependency Matrices

A review of “Best data modelling tools” falls well short of my expectations #PowerDesigner #erwin #erstudio

ITPro have just published an article called “Best data modelling tools“. When I clicked on the link in my regular ITPro email, I expected to find a well-reasoned set of arguments about the pros and cons of several tools, based upon a defined list of expectations.

I was hugely disappointed by what I found in this ‘In-depth’ (their words, not mine) review. My score for this ‘review’ – 1 out of 10.

It’s probably better to say that I was disappointed by what I didn’t find – there is no list of expectations, and there are no well-reasoned arguments. The authors do acknowledge that there are “subtle differences between the leading platforms”, but they fail to describe them.

There are just a few words to describe each of seven tools, two of which are from the same vendor, with no attempt at any form of comparison. The reader is left none the wiser about their capabilities.

By the way, the folks at Erwin will be very disappointed by this review, as their tool isn’t even mentioned.
