Instructor-led PowerDesigner Training

Metadata Matters Limited provides unrivalled expertise in SAP PowerDesigner, from evaluating modelling tools through to training users of the tool. We enable organisations to move “from selection to effective”, by providing a blend of consultancy, training, and pre-built PowerDesigner resources.

Metadata Matters Limited provide several training courses for PowerDesigner users, all presented by George McGeachie, author of “Data Modeling Made Simple with PowerDesigner”.

PowerDesigner Fundamentals for Data Architects

The course will teach you how to set up and use the PowerDesigner environment, how to create and manage objects and sub-objects, how to use the editing tools effectively, how to prettify and organise diagrams, and how to generate and manage models.

The “Fundamentals” course is designed to provide the essential knowledge required for data architects, covering a lot of material in a short time. In the time available, it can only introduce the user to PowerDesigner – there is insufficient time to cover topics in depth, or to carry out a detailed case study; the “Building the Data Model Pyramid” course uses a detailed case study to reinforce the Fundamental techniques, as well as introducing several more techniques.

The knowledge supplied by this course is a prerequisite for the more advanced training courses offered by Metadata Matters Limited.

Building the Data Model Pyramid with PowerDesigner

Learn how to develop a chain of data models (Conceptual, Logical, Physical) for a fictional publisher, and link to the outputs from Business Analysis.

This course reinforces and extends the techniques covered in the “Fundamentals” course. It uses a detailed case study to reinforce the Fundamental techniques, as well as introducing additional techniques, such as the ability to link to other kinds of models, and to the results of business analysis. Ideally, the material requires two days to be covered in sufficient depth, though it can be covered in a single day, if the final module (Generating the Physical Data Model) is omitted.

Building and Using the PowerDesigner Conceptual Data Model

You know how to work with Logical and Physical Data Models in SAP PowerDesigner, and now you need to work with Conceptual Data Models as well. This course will teach you how best to utilise the features that make the Conceptual Data Model stand out from the others – additional notations, Data Items, and additional model generation options.

Excel Import Workshop

Do you need to import metadata into PowerDesigner from Excel? Are you evaluating modelling tools, and need to find out more about SAP PowerDesigner?

– then –

Join the author of “Data Modeling Made Simple with PowerDesigner” in a short workshop, to learn about and practice with the standard PowerDesigner Excel import feature.

PowerDesigner’s built-in ability to import metadata from Excel files is unsurpassed by other mainstream data modelling tools. No scripting skills are required — the Excel import is aware of the metamodel for the model you’re creating or updating, and suggests likely targets for your metadata.

Take Control of your Database Schemas with PowerDesigner

This course will enable you to:

  • Create and manage Physical Data Models
  • Generate, merge and compare models
  • Reverse-engineer existing databases to create data models
  • Synchronise physical data models with databases

This course builds on and reinforces the lesson learned in the “Fundamentals” training, focusing on the tasks carried out by those responsible for editing and managing Physical Data Models, including the different normalisation techniques available.

Model Management with the PowerDesigner Repository

This one-day course is designed to teach model management techniques to both modellers and administrators, as they apply to the PowerDesigner Repository.

After completing this, class users will be able to work effectively within the PowerDesigner Repository environment, understand the version control process, understand the Library, and create a business glossary and taxonomy. The class covers understanding and working with the PowerDesigner Repository, and understanding the workflow and business glossary.

The course does not include setting up, configuring, or administering the repository. The course is based on best practices from the perspective of the repository end user.

PowerDesigner for Advanced Users

If you’ve been using SAP PowerDesigner for a while

– and – you’re ready to know more about the tool

– or – you’re responsible for designing your modelling methodology

then this course is for you!

This course will teach you how to utilise and benefit from the features that make SAP PowerDesigner stand out from the pack, as well as helping you avoid unnecessary complexity.

For example, using shortcuts and replications to share objects can be very beneficial but, like all complex mechanisms, you must design and govern your approach carefully.
